‘Hospice Heroes’ of CHRISTUS VNA Hospice Team illuminate the way to a ‘higher path’ for caring.
"In every crisis, doubt or confusion, take the higher path – the path of compassion, courage, understanding and love." Amit Ray
The entire CHRISTUS VNA Hospice Team in San Antonio, TX performed many acts of support and comradery for their patients, patient families, and each other during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
- Executive Director volunteered her husband to watch the children of staff members who found their children would be out of school beyond spring break.
- Chaplain, a self-proclaimed “hugger”, now bows with her hands together, and recites to her patients and patient family members on her home visits “to the holy within you” and family members return the bow.
- RN’s and CNA’s have been ensuring that their Nursing Home patients receive the special treats and letters prepared by the patient’s family members who are no longer permitted to visit their loved ones in the facilities.
- Office staff, have been taking alternating turns to contact paint and hardware stores within a 75 miles radius of San Antonio to locate N-95 masks for our staff, and then drove and picked-up any available PPE, to ensure its availability to our patient care staff.
- Marketing staff, have been surprising the office team members with ‘comfort foods’ on a weekly basis.
- Volunteers have been making fabric face masks for the patient care team members.
- Medical Directors have had no hesitation to complete Face-to Face visits during this most difficult period.
- Patient Care Managers, who begin their daily work day by 7:00 a.m. and end their days, many times, after 7:00 p.m., have helped to maintain a sense of calmness and order in the office
- All of the rest of the CHRISTUS VNA Hospice Team has been practicing compassion, mercy, and patience to their patients, families and to each other and have been getting the job done during a difficult period.
Thanks to the entire San Antonio Team for reminding us that compassion, courage, understanding, and love is the path to take during a crisis. You guys are our Hospice Heroes! – Contributed by Lori Stagg, DP Hospice Operations, Legacy Div
